Unarmed Security Staff
Unarmed security guards are assisting the Illinois State University Police as extra eyes and ears, making the campus safer and more secure. At the April 2012 meeting, the Illinois State University Board of Trustees approved a new contract with Securitas for unarmed security services to relieve the Illinois State University Police of non-core functions, such as access control, which reduces police service and response times. Unarmed security services first began on the campus on November 29, 2010.
The main duties for the security guards include:
- Opening, closing and checking doors to campus buildings
- Safe walk escorts
- Assisting faculty and staff who are locked out of buildings
- Assisting with special event security
- Directed foot patrols of the campus.
The security guards do not have law enforcement authority and are not permitted to take police action. However, the security guards will be in direct communication with the Illinois State University Police.
Security guards wear uniforms clearly distinguishable from the campus police and other local police agencies. Security guards wear gray shirts with the Securitas logo on the sleeve. They also wear black jackets with reflective “Security” appearing on both the front and back of the jacket.
Anyone needing the services of a security guard for a campus safe walk escort or assist with a lock out should call the ISU Police non-emergency number at (309) 438-8631, or (309) 438-WALK.
